ProjectBudgeter

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know about our home improvement planning and calculation databases.

How are the cost estimates calculated?

We maintain a database of average materials prices and labor baseline parameters. When you select a location, our system applies state-specific multipliers derived from regional labor indices and material shipping indices, computing localized low, average, and high estimates.

How accurate are the estimates on Project Budgeter?

Our estimates serve as a highly accurate baseline for budgeting and checking contractor bids. However, local supply chains, seasonal contractor demand, design customizations, and permit fees will influence your final project invoice.

Should I trust these calculators over a contractor's bid?

No. A physical bid from a local licensed contractor who has inspected your property is always the final authority. Our calculators help you verify that those bids are fair and within standard ranges for your area.

Do your calculations include permit costs?

No. Permit and inspection fees depend on county and municipal regulations, ranging from $50 for simple window upgrades up to $2,000+ for structural additions. We advise factoring in an extra 5% to 10% for municipal approvals.

How often is the pricing data updated?

Our data teams audit base material costs and regional labor rate indices annually. The pricing variables shown reflect standard rates current for 2026.

Why do some states have much higher estimates?

States like California, Hawaii, New York, and Massachusetts have high labor multipliers (ranging from 1.25x to 1.50x) due to higher cost of living standards, workers' comp premiums, and regional logistics surcharges, raising overall contractor rates.
